Description

Safe Harbor Kittery Point is looking for an experienced Sailboat Rigger to join our team. Riggers effectively and efficiently install, maintain, repair, and replace sailboat rigging and sail systems. Applicant must have an extensive working knowledge of sailboat rigging and hardware. Must be detail oriented. 3 years of experience preferred. We have two waterfront facilities in Kittery and Eliot, Maine that service, store and repair recreational power and sailing vessels ranging from 18′ to +50′.  Position is full-time, year-round, with benefits.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Unstep and step masts
  • Assemble and disassemble spars
  • Tune standing rigging
  • Connect and troubleshoot mast lights and wiring
  • Install booms, sails, running rigging
  • Prepare sailboats to safely sail
  • Splice lines, service winches and furling systems-both manual and electrical/hydraulic.
  • Service sailboat steering systems and deck hardware
  • Wax and clean spars
  • Inspect and estimate repairs

Safety and Environmental Responsibilities

  • Follow SHM Safety and Environmental rules and complete required related training.
  • Wear proper personal protective equipment (may include safety glasses, gloves, life jackets and/or hard hats) as required for the task or work area. 
  • Report all accidents, injuries, spills and near misses immediately. 

Technical and Physical Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Sailing/ rigging knowledge required
  • Hoisting/Crane Operator experience preferred
  • Ability to ascend and descend a ladder
  • Familiarity with boats and nomenclature
  • Ability to lift 100 pounds
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions
  • Basic boat handling skills required
  • Ability to hang, move, twist, and climb with loads
  • Must be able to go aloft

About The Landing School:

Founded in 1978 in a repurposed cow barn, The Landing School has grown into a nationally respected institution training the next generation of craftspeople, designers, and technicians for the marine industry. We offer four intensive, hands-on programs: Wooden Boat Building (WBB), Marine Systems (MS), Composite Boat Building (CBB), and Yacht Design (YD)—the only program of its kind in the U.S.

Position Overview:

The Landing School is seeking a full-time Assistant Wooden Boatbuilding Instructor for the 2025–2026 academic year. This position supports our Wooden Boatbuilding program, providing critical assistance in instruction, shop management, and student support.

The ideal candidate will have experience in woodworking or boatbuilding, demonstrate strong interpersonal and safety practices, and enjoy working in a hands-on, student-centered environment. This role offers a rare opportunity to contribute meaningfully to one of the most established wooden boatbuilding programs in the country.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Lead Instructor in preparing and delivering wooden boatbuilding curriculum and instruction
  • Support students in the shop during labs and class time, providing guidance and mentorship
  • Prepare materials, tools, and setups for demonstrations and hands-on learning
  • Maintain woodworking equipment and shop cleanliness
  • Monitor standing inventory and coordinate with staff to order shop supplies as needed
  • Demonstrate and enforce best practices for safety in all shop activities
  • Collaborate with faculty to ensure consistent curriculum outcomes
  • Attend weekly faculty meetings, professional development sessions, and all-school events
  • Participate in all-school functions, such as graduation, launch, and student orientation

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of hands-on woodworking or finish carpentry experience
    OR a degree in Building Construction Technology or a related field
  • Familiarity with a wide range of lumber and its application in wooden boat construction
  • Experience supervising or leading a small crew in a shop or construction environment
  • Proficiency using woodworking machines, tools, and safety procedures
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong work ethic, organization, and attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Wooden boatbuilding experience (professional, personal, or educational)
  • Prior teaching, training, or mentorship experience in a technical or trades-based environment

Position: This is a full-time, permanent position under the direct supervision of the Director of Education, hired by the President of the School.

Objective:

The Composite Boatbuilding curriculum is designed to provide students with a structured learning environment where they can develop proficiency in the fundamental principles of construction and manufacturing techniques used in the composites industry, primarily within the Marine Trades Industry.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Composites Instructor will:

  • Work directly with students, leading lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on composite fabrication in the shop.
  • Guide students in learning through clear communication, effective instruction, and hands-on mentorship.
  • Assess student learning through assignments, practical applications, and theoretical testing.
  • Continuously develop and improve the curriculum and teaching materials.
  • Assist with administrative tasks related to the program, as assigned by the Director of Education.
  • Stay current with industry trends and teaching methodologies.
  • Oversee and manage program assistants, if applicable.
  • Collaborate professionally with staff, faculty, and students to maintain a positive learning environment.

Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree or higher.
  • Minimum of four years of industry experience in composite construction and repair using fiberglass, Kevlar, carbon fiber, and polyester, vinylester, and epoxy resin systems.
  • Strong practical experience with open and closed-molding techniques, including wet-layup, infusion, and pre-preg.
  • Experience in yacht construction and repair is a strong plus.
  • Experience in CNC programming and cutting is a plus.
  • Practical experience in design and specification development is a plus.
  • Prior teaching experience is a strong plus.

Job Description
At Strouts Point Wharf Company the Marina Manager is our ambassador to the waterfront. They are the primary contact for our summer customers. Their main duty is to create a safe, fun, and pleasurable environment for our marina and mooring guests. The Marina Manager will provide excellent customer service and help us exceed our customers’ expectations. They will perform administrative and supervisory roles including hiring dock staff, scheduling, coordinating, and promoting daily and seasonal operations. This position could be seasonal but there is an opportunity for administrative or yard labor work to make this a year-round position. This is a flexible position and can be tailored to fit the right candidate.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the marina, ensuring efficient use of resources and that all
    activities run smoothly.
  • Manage, train, and schedule marina staff.
  • Provide top-notch service to boaters, and visitors, addressing inquiries, concerns, and ensuring
    a safe, enjoyable experience for all.
  • Be on-site weekends during our busy season to provide a consistent point of contact for our
    customers.
  • Ensure the marina’s facilities, docks, and boats are well-maintained, addressing any necessary
    repairs promptly.
  • Enforce safety protocols, regulatory standards, and environmental regulations, including

Able to work independently and be a team player
Comfortable in a position managing a high school and college age staff
Familiarity with the boating industry, including common boating practices and equipment.
