Assistant Dockmaster 

The assistant dockmaster at Maine Yacht Center is a leadership role. The right candidate will be able to troubleshoot problems, resolve disputes, provide excellent customer service and maintain a professional demeanor at all times.

Strong “jack of all trades” type maintenance experience is preferred, with an ability to diagnose, repair and maintain systems. Specific systems training is provided but strong mechanical skills are necessary. Solid background in maintenance repairs to include plumbing, electrical, paint, carpentry, construction, etc. is a plus. Experience in a marine environment or onboard vessels is preferred.

This job is ideal for someone who is:

  • Dependable — more reliable than spontaneous
  • People-oriented — enjoys interacting with people and working on group projects
  • Detail-oriented — would rather focus on the details of work than the bigger picture
  • Autonomous/Independent — enjoys working with little direction

You will assist the Dockmaster (marina manager) to keep the marina running smoothly by taking on managerial tasks and often serving as our customers’ first point of contact for all matters relative to the marina. You will be heavily involved in the day-to-day supervision and leadership of summer staff and working with customers. You should have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with problems as they arise.

Some traits we require: Leadership skills, responsibility, timeliness and reliability, decision-making capability, ability to multi-task, be well-organized, strong communication and interpersonal skills, flexibility, a desire to be a part of a cohesive team, and a sense of humor.

Position requirements: Supervise staff. Scheduling boat arrivals. Opening and closing duties, balancing point of sale. Skilled in the operation of small boats to 25 feet preferred, but we will train. Maintain marina systems by performing annual maintenance and emergency repairs. Skill set to operate hand held and power tools, often over water. Unimpaired ability to walk, bend, stoop, climb and work safely around water, on ladders and on boats. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds repeatedly. Ability to use a computer and VHF radio. Valid driver’s license and strict insurability requirements necessary. Skill set in any of the various boat building disciplines is a plus.

Most importantly, we are looking for the right fit for our organization and culture, and we will train that person if needed.

This can be a year-round position which is waterfront specific for 7 months of the year, while working within the service department doing boat maintenance and repair projects commensurate with experience for the remaining 5 months. It can also simply be a 7 months/year position.

POSITION SUMMARY: Individuals perform a wide variety of boat building tasks related to wood/composite tenders, including,
but not limited to, fabricating/ fitting composite components, installation of deck hardware, hatches, and windows.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/ACTIVITIES:
▪ Perform a wide variety of boat building tasks related to wood/composite yachts
▪ Fabricating/ fitting composite components, installing deck hardware, hinges, latches, and handrails.
▪ Sets and operates a variety of woodworking machines, including power and hand tools
▪ Must be intensely aware of quality standards
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
▪ 3-4 years of experience, or equivalent training and experience
▪ Ability to work with power and hand tools, Drilling screwing, sanding, etc.
▪ Ability to work within close tolerances, +- 1-2mm
▪ Ability to work with large power tools such as band saws, planers, table saws
▪ Work with epoxy, resins and glues
▪ Must be able to follow directions and work well within large groups of people
▪ Must be able to meet the requirements of the schedule
▪ Ability to wear a respirator as required
▪ Must wear personal protection equipment
▪ Must have basic hand tools
▪ Works ‘hands on’ on multiple projects
