GENERAL MANAGER

POSITION SUMMARY:
The General Manager (“GM”) is responsible for the management and supervision of all operating aspects of Hodgdon Yacht Service’s (“HYS”) boatyard in Southport (the “Boatyard”), including the Southport Marina. within budgetary guidelines in an efficient, cost effective, and creative manner following established policies and procedures.  Responsibilities at Hodgdon Marina in Boothbay Harbor TBD and will be coordinated with the President of the Hodgdon Group. The GM position will report to the President and CEO of the Hodgdon Group. The Boatyard and the Marina are just two of several geographic locations and operational divisions of the Hodgdon Group.

The GM must be a highly enthusiastic leader who takes a positive team approach and gains immediate credibility with his or her subordinates, peers, and supervisors. The GM should take pride in working for Hodgdon and pride in his or her work product and communicates that pride to customers, employees, and vendors. 

The GM must be a professional who will bring valuable business judgment, vision, ambition, organization, and drive to the position and constantly asks, “How can we improve, be the best in the business, remain ahead of the competition and how can I best support this organization?”

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The GM will have full responsibility for all operations and service functions at the Boatyard and the Southport Marina and will be involved in generating leads, estimating jobs, preparing bids, planning manpower allocation, monitoring job progress, reviewing invoices and assuring timely job completion within budget in conjunction with the Service Managers
  • Collaborates with Hodgdon Management on the allocation of personnel for the execution of companywide projects as needed.
  • Responsible for achieving budgeted revenue and gross profit goals and will also have responsibility for certain operating expenses of the Boatyard and Marina operations. These budgets shall be established by the President and CFO of Hodgdon Group in coordination with the GM. The GM will actively participate in the preparation of annual operating budgets. The GM will monitor with his team the progress of actual versus projected budget results on a monthly basis and investigate negative deviations and set and monitor objectives to correct.  The GM will also meet quarterly with the senior management team to review actual results to budgeted results. 
  • Lead and manage a team of service managers and technicians in the Boatyard and waterfront personnel at its waterfront operations in Southport.  Meets with the Service Managers regularly. 

Seek to maximize the filling of storage capacity at all Hodgdon facilities and leased facilities. Oversee the operations of Boothbay Boat Rental, the company’s boat rental business.

  • The CFO of Hodgdon Group is responsible for all HR, IT and finance and accounting matters at all facilities and divisions of Hodgdon, including at the Boatyard and the Marina.  The GM will coordinate said activities at these facilities in an open and friendly manner with the CFO and his or her staff.
  • The GM will communicate and collaborate actively with the President with respect to all matters at the Boatyard and the Marina and asks daily “what does the President need to know today”. 
  • Responsible for constantly strengthening the organization’s ability to develop and deliver superior quality service at the Boatyard and Marina. 
  • Accountable for the prompt, courteous and safe service to all customers and will interact positively with customers.  
  • Ensure safety protocols are a priority with each department in the Boatyard and Marina.
  • With respect to the inventory used by the operations at these two locations, the GM shall:
    • Work with the parts manager to ensure adequate and cost- efficient inventory levels of all essential products, adjusting for seasonal fluctuations.
  • With respect to the staff at these locations, the GM shall:
    • Coordinate the training and development of employees for further education, including securing and maintaining ‘approved technician’ status with respect to the vendor dealerships and ABYC. 
    • Develop best practices for an efficient and hardworking yard team.
    • Provide advice and guidance to yard crew in an effort to execute work effectively and to the highest quality.
    • Define and communicate acceptable workmanship standards to the crew.
    • Define and communicate expected labor productivity levels on a seasonal basis.
    • Recruit and hire new employees as needed under the direction of senior management and in coordination with the Human Resources Manager.
    • Responsible for periodic and annual performance review of all employees at the Boatyard and the Marina.
    • Reviews compensation for HYS employees and coordinates with HR to recommend annual COL and merit changes in compensation to the President and CFO.
  • With respect to the facilities and equipment, the GM shall:
    • Ensure proper controls for safeguarding of all Boatyard and Marina assets. 
    • Routinely inspects and ensures an above average appearance for HYS’ property. 
    • Oversee equipment and small tools maintenance. 
    • Collaborates, oversees, and assigns work to the Facilities/Equipment Manager on HYS regular maintenance programs and issues. 
    • Identifies HYS capx projects and equipment purchases to the President and CFO.  
  • With respect to sale and marketing efforts to support the businesses of the Boatyard and the Marina:
    • Participate in marketing and sales efforts including proposal generation, attending boat shows, and participating in potential client meetings. 
    • Responsible for promotion of the Boatyard and the Marina through participation in local community activities, yacht clubs, and chambers of commerce as directed by the President of Hodgdon.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree, or related on the job training/experience


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND QUALITIES:

  • Ability to multi-task, managing multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Ability to be a team player at all levels for the organization. 
  • Ability to execute his or her responsibilities in a highly professional and pro-active fashion to maximize shareholder value.
  • Experience with Dockmaster or similar ERP systems
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Smartsheet, and FareHarbor  
  • Maintain a positive and motivated work environment.
  • Respond to and resolve customer disputes consistent with the philosophy of the Hodgdon Group. 
  • To be a leader, mentor, and coach for your employees.
  • The GM must bring substantial sales and client relations/retention experience. 
  • Boat handling skills.
  • Extraordinary knowledge of boats and seamanship and breadth of knowledge of moorings, floats, docks, and how to properly secure and adequately tie-up a boat in various weather conditions.  Coordinate with HYS Dockmaster before weekends, holidays, and at the end of the day when weather conditions could deteriorate to secure the marina, boats, moorings, and waterfront.  
  • Ability to serve as an ambassador of Hodgdon and HYS with its customers and industry associations.
  • Public speaking skills are a plus
  • The position requires a thorough working knowledge of building and repairing boats to ABYC, Coast Guard and NMMA standards.
  • Be available for 24 hour telephone contact for emergency response.

POSITION SUMMARY:
HODGDON YACHTS is searching for an entry level Designer at our Tenders Division in Damariscotta, ME who will assist with the design of custom Tenders for the super yacht industry.  Successful candidates will have working knowledge of mechanical design and drafting.  Familiarity with naval architecture, boatbuilding methods and composite constructions are a plus.  They will assist senior members of the engineering team with preparation of drawings and documentation for fabrication and construction, as well as liaise with the production manager and other members of the production team to bring designs to completion.  We offer the opportunity to work on world class boats, great work environment, excellent benefits including health insurance, paid time off, holidays, 401(K) with employer match, and four-day work weeks.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/ACTIVITIES:

  • Work directly with all individuals in the Design and Engineering Department as well as all other departments to support efficient production
  • Communicate with and support production department design needs based on the overall production schedule
  • Navigate, manipulate, or create 3D models and the associated drawings
  • Learn the basics of composite construction to assist with the design of components and tooling
  • Prepare models for 3D printing
  • Review specifications of equipment and designs to aid with regulatory compliance and safety considerations

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • Familiarity with boat systems, boat construction, and naval architecture
    • Experience with 3D modeling, engineering drawing standards, and Microsoft Office
    • B.A. / B.S. or equivalent work experience
    • Solid Edge modeling a plus but not required

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:

Work schedule is generally 6:00am-4:30pm four days per week. From time to time, it may be necessary to work additional shifts or on weekends. Must be able to conform to the schedule, must follow safety rules and wear personal protective equipment as required.

Jeff’s Marine, Inc. – Part-Time Seasonal – 30+ Hours/Week – Designated Weekends for Summer Season & Boat Shows

Overview

The parts department is a key component of Jeff’s Marine. They assist customers with finding the correct parts for their projects. They assist in ordering parts for mechanics, individual customers, and other boatyards, and maintaining appropriate inventory levels.

Responsibilities & Duties

Duties include: ordering parts; checking in & receiving parts as they arrive; looking up parts for customers; keeping the parts room organized; answering phone calls & taking messages when appropriate; and other tasks as assigned.

Jeff’s Marine, Inc. – Part-Time Seasonal – Variable Hours/Week – Designated Weekends for Summer Season

Overview

Boat detailers are an essential component of Jeff’s Marine’s spring commissioning season. They assist in getting boats ready to be delivered. They specifically have an eye for detail and work well independently. They assist the yard crew in completing tasks to meet deadlines.

Responsibilities & Duties

Duties include: boat detailing & cleaning; buffing & waxing boats; organization of cleaning supply room; maintenance of yard, garage bays, storage buildings and equipment; and other tasks as assigned.
